One Fish, Two Fish
The high seas are the least protected place on the planet-and
it shows. The first mapping of predatory fish diversity in the
open ocean, published in the journal Science, revealed that
the diversity of tuna, marlin and swordfish has declined by up
to 50 percent...

New Ideas About Old Sharks. A rare fossil sheds light on
the poorly understood relationship between early sharks
and bony fishes. (S. Turner, & R. F. Miller in American
Scientist). The evolution of jaws was a crucial step in
vertebrate history, but it took place so long ago that fossils
from this period consist mostly of teeth and a bewildering
variety of skin scales...

Can We Have Our Fish and Eat Them Too?
"In a Perfect Ocean: The State of Fisheries and Ecosystems in the North
Atlantic Ocean" By Daniel Pauly and Jay Maclean. xxxii + 175 pp. Island
Press, 2003.
Because more than 60 percent of the Earth's swelling population lives within 100
kilometers of the seacoast, it's not surprising that the litany of human insults to
the oceans is extensive and growing: Pollution, habitat destruction and
degradation, importation of invasive species, and fisheries have all had
devastating effects on marine biodiversity. Daniel Pauly and Jay Maclean's In a
Perfect Ocean reports the findings of an ambitious project that undertook to
measure the harm fishing has inflicted on the ecosystems of the North Atlantic
and to propose ways of reversing the trend...

Apalaanchi Project 2. After many talks, the
project is finally set to begin. Terrazul and
Corpoguajira (Guajira Regional Authonomous
Corporation) have joined efforts to build 600 Reef
Balls in Cabo de la Vela. The project will also
account for community interests and marine
surveys through out its length.
Another project coming next February 2006.
This time will be deploying 40 Layer Cakes of Reef
Ball. The research study investigates how well the
structures can function as aggregation and
conservation devices for the culture of spiny
lobsters Panulirus argus.
Minding the storm
When ancient sailors spread oil on the sea to calm a storm, they may have been
onto something. Sea spray kicked up by churning ocean waves can reduce...
Notes on Ecologically Sustainable Yield
Based on the logistic population growth model, populations have a modest
capacity for growth (top) when they are small and attain the greatest capacity
when they reach an intermediate size...
Destabilizing the marine food web
Marine organisms interact in numerous ways, transferring energy through various
trophic levels in the marine food web. Thus fishing can affect entire ecosystems as
well as...
